The Ultimate K-Swap Parts Checklist: Everything You Need to Know

Planning a K20 or K24 swap for your Honda? Here is the absolute track-tested checklist of hardware, mounts, electronics, and plumbing needed to get the job done right.

Swapping a K-series engine into a classic Honda chassis (like the EG Civic, EK Civic, or DC2 Integra) is one of the most rewarding performance upgrades you can make. With factory power ranging from 200 to 240 horsepower out of the box, bulletproof reliability, and an endless aftermarket ecosystem, the K-swap has become the gold standard of front-wheel-drive motorsports.

However, planning a swap can be overwhelming. Missing a single specialized bracket, custom hose, or wiring adapter can stall your build for weeks. To keep your build on track, we have compiled the absolute, track-tested K-swap parts checklist.

1. Engine & Transmission Mounts

Since the K-series engine spins clockwise (unlike older B and D-series engines which spin counter-clockwise), you must use a dedicated conversion mount kit.

  • Hasport Performance Mounts: The industry benchmark. We recommend the 62A durometer polyurethane bushing for street/track builds, or 70A/88A for dedicated drag and road course builds to minimize engine movement.
  • Subframe/Suspension Clearance: Depending on your mount brand and engine model (K20 vs K24 block height), make sure you check hood clearance and oil pan ground clearance.

2. Electronics, Wiring & ECU

Getting a modern OBD2 engine to communicate with an older chassis requires a custom conversion harness and a programmable ECU.

  • Engine Management: A Hondata K-Pro V4 or a standalone Haltech Elite ECU is mandatory to tune out the factory immobilizer and map your performance upgrades.
  • Conversion Harness: Companies like Rywire make plug-and-play conversion wiring harnesses that link the K-series engine harness to your factory under-dash cabin harness.
  • Primary O2 Sensor: Always use a high-quality wideband O2 sensor (Denso or OEM Honda) to ensure the ECU can properly monitor and self-adjust your fuel mixtures in closed-loop operation.

3. Fuel Delivery & Lines

The K-series uses a returnless fuel system from the factory, whereas older Hondas use a return-style fuel system with a firewall-mounted fuel pressure regulator. You must convert the K-series fuel rail setup to work with your chassis.

  • Billet Fuel Rail: A high-flow aftermarket fuel rail (such as our BoostyBuilt Billet Fuel Rail series) allows fuel lines to be plumbed into either end.
  • Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR): Mount an aftermarket regulator (Aeromotive or Fuelab) to control and return excess fuel back to the tank. Set static pressure to exactly 50 PSI (3.5 Bar).
  • Teflon (PTFE) Fuel Lines: Standard rubber fuel lines will dry out and degrade under modern ethanol (E85) blends. Always run steel-braided PTFE lines for absolute track safety.

4. Exhaust and Plumbing

Because the K-series ports exit out of the back of the engine (towards the firewall), custom routing is required.

  • K-Swap Headers: Standard K-series headers will collide with your rear crossmember. You must use a specialized "K-swap specific" header designed to sweep down and clear the steering rack.
  • Cooling System: Use a high-efficiency dual-pass aluminum radiator. Install a K-swap silicone hose kit to adapt the engine's coolant neck layout to the radiator layout.
